10 Reasons Why Drinking Water is Important for Skincare

10 Reasons Why Drinking Water is Important for Skincare

We all want to look and feel our best, right? Drinking an adequate amount of water daily is important for overall good health, staying vibrant and having beautiful skin. Water aids in digestion, circulation, absorption and even rids the body and skin of toxins. With fewer toxins in your body, you will look and feel healthier. Many people often report that, by increasing their water intake, their skin has a more radiant glow.

A 2007 study in the International Journal of Cosmetic Science took an in-depth look at the effects of long-term water intake on skin health. This study found that drinking 2.25 liters (9.5 cups) of water every day for four weeks altered skin density and thickness. A second study from the University of Missouri-Columbia showed that drinking 500 milliliters of water (about two cups) increased blood flow to the skin. Without a doubt, drinking water matters when it comes to your skin's overall health and beauty.

So, the big question is . . . . Do you drink enough water every day?

Most health experts agree 11.5 cups (2.7 liters) a day for women and 15.5 cups (3.7 liters) a day for men.

This also is dependent on physical activity, temperature and climate. If you eat foods containing high levels of salt or dense, non-water containing foods like bread, pasta, meat and non-fruit or non-vegetable foods, consider adding more water during your daily regimen. Caffeinated drinks that are dehydrating, like sodas, coffees and teas that contain caffeine, rob your body of life-giving water and you should consider cutting back on these beverage, or add more water throughout the day.

I see a significant increase in the overall health, vitality and beautiful skin in my patients when they follow my recommendations of increasing water intake into their daily lives. It is the most simple, inexpensive and easiest health promoting activity there is.

10 Reasons Why Drinking Water is Important for Skincare

When you drink enough water, the cells in every part of your body get hydrated through the blood. The skin, being the largest organ of your body, also gets hydrated, even as the impurities and toxins get flushed out at the cellular level.

Here are all 10 reasons why drinking water is important for your skin:

1. Improves Skin Tone

Drinking enough water helps the body to flush out toxins, while giving you healthier skin. Studies have shown that drinking just two cups of water [1] can increase blood flow to the skin, which helps to give it an even tone.

2. Helps Prevent Premature Aging

Staying hydrated helps with skin elasticity, as it stays moisturized longer. Heightened elasticity in the skin implies delayed sagging of the skin and no premature appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

3. Promotes Faster Healing

If you have been out in the sun and got sunburned, drinking water can speed up the healing process.

4. Helps Reduce Puffiness

When the skin looks puffy, it is actually retaining water to protect you from dehydration. This occurs when you don’t drink enough water. Staying hydrated will reduce swelling and puffiness in your face.

5. Helps Prevent Acne

Drinking ample water balances the oil and water content on the skin of your face. This helps to prevent excess oil and sebum secretion, which means fewer clogged pores and acne.

Adult acne is getting more common these days due to busy lifestyles and lack of hydration.

6. Eliminate Itchy Skin On The Face

Dry skin always tends to itch. It can even develop dry flakes and crack due to lack of moisture. Drinking enough water ensures your skin doesn’t get dry to the point it itches.

7. Tighter Skin

Sudden weight loss can cause your skin to sag. To prevent your skin from sagging and to tighten it in areas where sagging is most prominent, like the upper arms, thighs, waist and jawline, drinking water helps to revive the skin’s elasticity.

8. Maintains Your pH Balance

Sensitive, acne-ridden skin or problem skin due to various issues, can be revived to a healthier version with adequate water consumption. Your skin can glow and be free of blemishes if you drink enough water  . . . that will help to balance your body’s pH levels.

9. Clear Liver Toxins

Water aids in clearing the liver of toxins you may ingest throughout the day. These toxins can be from the environment, daily diet, your skincare products and the laundry detergent you use, just to name a few. We live in a heavily toxin-burdened society. So, give your liver a break and help filter this daily heavy load by drinking the required amount of water each day.

10. Promotes Healthy Gut, Meaning Clearer Skin

Intake of sufficient water helps maintain a healthy gut and aids in proper digestion. It helps regulate bowel movements, and flushes toxins from your body through urine and feces. Since your skin is the largest organ of your body for both absorption and excretion, what you put on your skin and what you put in your body is so important to the health and overall look and feel of your skin.

So, if you desire the most beautiful skin you could possibly have (naturally), consider the "inside-out" job that water provides. Drink pure clean water for your health and it will show in your beautiful skin; skin you will love and could very well and often be complimented on for a lifetime.
